Montgomery County, Maryland, is making headlines by becoming the first school district in the United States to introduce pickleball as a varsity sport. Starting this fall, all 25 high schools in the county will have their own pickleball teams, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership with the DC Pickleball Team and JOOLA. Dr. Jeff Sullivan, MCPS Athletic Director, expressed his enthusiasm for the introduction of pickleball into the county's sports programs. "We are bringing varsity Pickleball to all 25 high schools this coming fall season, with a partnership with the DC Pickleball Team and JOOLA," he announced. This decision not only marks a significant milestone for Montgomery County but also sets a precedent for other districts across the nation. "Montgomery County is the first district in the country to deem pickleball as a varsity sport," Dr. Sullivan proudly stated.

Adam Behnke, Chief Operating Officer of the DC Pickleball Team, spoke about the unique bonding opportunities pickleball offers. "Parents that are trying to connect with their kids can play the same sport as their child," he said, noting the sport's appeal across generations. Beyond just a school sport, the introduction of pickleball also opens doors for future athletic careers. "Pioneering a pathway to pro," Behnke described, as he outlined the potential for students to progress to professional levels. He added, "We are really excited to see how this is going to create opportunities for our student athletes to potentially one day wear an MLP jersey just like our pro, Vivian Glozman."

Support from JOOLA and Beyond

The initiative has also garnered support from JOOLA, a leading brand in the pickleball industry. JOOLA CEO, Richard Lee, highlighted the company's contributions to the program. "On top of providing all the paddles, nets, and balls, JOOLA is excited to design the first varsity pickleball uniform. We are also providing coaching education through our partner, RacketPro, which is the premier coaching education platform in pickleball," Lee explained.
